Pyrolysis:
Characterization of paint from artwork with automated THM and OPTIC 3 Injector.
In the investigation of art-work, Py-GC is extremely useful because solid samples can be direct introduced and a minimal of sample is required. However, pyrolysis of natural and polar materials results in polar fragments which are not accessible for GC. To overcome this limitation, THM-GC can be used, the polar (macro)molecules will be hydrolysed and methylated resulting in less polar fragments. The information obtained with THM-GC is very useful to find out which ingredients of paints, varnish, coatings and (natural) binders was used in artwork.
However, from a practical point of view, most conventional pyrolysis-units like curry-point and filament pyrolysers are very limited in the possibility to perform THM-GC which as a consequence: not repeatable and qualitative results. With the OPTIC this is now history, for solid samples as well as soluble samples it is easy to get quantitative data. The whole THM-reaction is done inside the injector (liner) and therefore it is possible to control and optimize all the important parameters for performing repeatable THM-GC.

SEC-PTV-GC-MS :
Fully automated analysis of 549 pesticides in oil with LCxGC and FOCUS auto sampler.
Normally, the analysis of pesticides in oil, like olive oil and sunflower oil, is difficult. The whole application is also a time-consuming and expensive because of the necessary sample preparation prior the GC-MS analysis. However, we developed a relative new approach whereby the whole procedure is automated. For the sample preparation Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC or GPC) is used. The oil is eluting earlier because of the bigger size of the oil-molecules. The later eluting pesticides are automated collected and injected using a special side-port syringe.
In this application note, a sun-flower oil is analyzed containing 549 pesticides (spiked at a level of 10 ppb),100 µl of the oil is injected into a SEC (mobile phase: ETAC/hexane mixture).

PTV-GC-MS TIC-chromatogram of the SEC-fraction including all the pesticides. Clearly, the injected fraction contains almost no components coming from the oil. |

Pyrolysis:
Pyrolysis-GC-MS for studying polymer solubility.
Pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) can be used to study syntheticpolymers. In recent years, it has been demonstrated that a programmed-temperature-vaporization (PTV) injector can be used to quantitatively determine the amounts of monomeric units present. This makes it possible to use Py-GC-MS for determining the composition of copolymers and for determining the concentrations of polymers in solution. The PTV injector allows samples to be injected as liquids (solutions) and its coupling with a state-of-the-art GC-MS system allows the analysis of very small amounts of polymers. Thus, Py-GC-MS with a PTV injector is a promising new tool for quantitative solubility studies of (co-)polymers. Py-GC-MS can be used to study polymer solubility as a function of solvent composition, temperature, etc.
